Air defense systems delivered by Russia to Syria incredibly have a range of up to 250 kilometers, said the director of the World Trade Center for Russia’s Arms Trade, Igor Korotchenko, to the press.

The specialist pointed out that the S-300 and S-400 systems are capable of destroying both electronic warfare aircraft and AWACS (Air Alert and Control System) aircraft.

“The range of the version that was supplied to Bashar Assad is up to 250 kilometers,” said Korotchenko.

In general, the range of the different modifications of the S-300 systems varies between 200 and 300 kilometers. This is 300% greater than the original S-300 system, and represents decades of state-of-the-art upgrades.

The upgraded Syrian systems can also engage up to 24 targets at a time.

“As for combat efficiency […], the S-300 systems, and especially the S-400 systems, significantly outperform the American Patriot systems,” Korotchenko said.

The supply of these Russian systems to other countries has provoked a hostile reaction from the US which, including, did not rule out sanctions against India because of the S-400 missile purchase agreement.

For Korotchenko, the reaction “is due to the [US] understanding that they are losing not only a billion-dollar market, but also geopolitical influence.”

Russia delivered Syria S-300 systems as a response after the tragedy with its Il-20 aircraft near the Syrian coast. Moscow blamed the accident on Israel, which at the time was launching attacks against Syrian territory.

In early October, the Russian Defense announced that it had finalized the delivery of 4 S-300 systems to the Arab country and that the local military would be taught to use them in only three months, meaning Moscow is finding this a top priority in Syria.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem also said during the week that Syria feels safer after Russia has supplied anti-aircraft missile systems.

“With regard to the security we now perceive with the presence of the S-300, yes, we feel more secure, and it is our right to be more protected against Israeli and other attacks,” said the head of Syrian diplomacy.
