S-700 System: Russia’s potential Trump Card in the Space Arms Race?
Published on: Oct 16, 2018 @ 15:36 – Russian Deputy Vladimir Zhirinovsky stated that Russia will eventually have the S-600 and S-700 anti-aircraft defense systems. A military analyst has made a prediction about when such a system may appear and how it would be used.
The deputy recently said that the Russian Armed Forces would have in their service not only the S-300 and S-400, but even S-500, S-600 and S-700 systems. The latter, according to Zhirinovsky, could “close the entire planet and no aircraft would be able to take off.”
Commenting on the words of the politician, military analyst Igor Korotchenko opined that the S-700, if so called, could be developed in 25-30 years and represent a laser anti-missile system against combat platforms positioned in the space ahead.
“In 25-30 years, after the US starts a space arms race, Russia will have to react and can install missile interceptor systems on orbital combat platforms in space, the weapon would operate on the basis of ‘new physical principles’, first of all with lasers,” Korotchenko suggested.
Prior to the S-700, step-by-step anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems based on the S-500 will be developed. These will be able to take out fast-moving crafts in ‘space’ – near earth orbit.
“At the moment we have the S-500 system, whose development is in the final phase and that in a short time will undergo tests and confirm their characteristics. After that will be made the decision on production in series,” he said.
For Korotchenko, modernizing the S-500 could result in 15-20 years in creating an S-600 ground system, while the S-700 will fit into the second area of air defense – in space.
Weapons based on new physical principles are weapons created on the basis of physical processes and phenomena already known but never used in conventional weapons (energy or laser) or weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical, biological).
There are several types of these weapons, including laser, radio frequency, particle beam weapons, kinetics, among others.
