Russian “sub killers’ in Mediterranean get the West’s attention
Frigates Admiral Makarov and Admiral Essen getting ink in Europe
Stanislav Blokhin writes in POLITROSSIA:
The West has gotten a message from Russia on the subject of Syria: the media have an explanation for the presence in the Mediterranean of Russian “submarine killers”
The maneuvers of the Russian ships “Admiral Makarov” and “Admiral Essen” in the Mediterranean Sea have attracted a lot of media attention. In particular, much material was devoted to this topic by the Austrian edition of Contra Magazine.
The authors of Contra Magazine drew attention to the fact that the Russian Navy has recently increasingly been conducting military exercises at a considerable distance from home. The Mediterranean Sea has become one of the most popular destinations, where there are a large number of maneuvers, which involve significant forces.
As for the Russian ships “Admiral Makarov” and “Admiral Essen”, the Austrian journalists called them “submarine killers.” These ships are armed with well-proven missiles “Caliber-NK”, which are designed to strike at a distance of 2.6 thousand kilometers, both on surface and on coastal targets. In addition, these combat units are equipped with other weapons, in particular, air defense systems.
Austrian journalists believe that the presence in the Mediterranean of Russian warships can be regarded as an unequivocal hint to Western states. Russia shows its opponents that it is not going to change its position on Syria: Moscow is ready to continue to support the legitimate government of this country.
Earlier, “PolitRussia” quoted the words of the head of the joint command of the British Armed Forces, General Richard Barrons, who admitted that the newest models of Russian weapons made the West more vulnerable than ever.
About these ships, we read in TASS for December 25, 2017:
“Admiral Makarov” was laid on the Yantar PSZ on February 29, 2012, and launched on September 2, 2015. This is the third ship in the series of patrol ships of project 11356 (developed by Northern Design Bureau) under construction at Yantar Design Bureau on the order of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The first two ships of the series, Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen, were commissioned in 2016. Ships of this project 1135.6 are designed to counter surface ships and submarines, to repel attacks of air attack weapons, both independently and as part of formations. They have universal rocket-artillery weapons and modern radio equipment for anti-submarine and air defense, have a displacement of about 4 thousand tons, a length of 125 m, speed – up to 30 knots.
