Surkov: Ukraine has Forever Lost the Donbass

Strong voices in the Kremlin now state that Donbass won’t be returning to Ukraine. Prominent Putin advisor, official aide, and longtime political strategist Vladislav Surkov said over the weekend that “the engine has been started”, the time of Donbass being a part of Ukraine has passed. This is significant due to the standing of Surkov in the Putin administration, and while not having precisely the same weight as those of FM Lavrov, they nevertheless represent ‘an’ official view of several pillars of Moscow’s power base.

Elections in the republics of the Donbass are scheduled for November 11th, a date fast approaching, and they will be held at the announced time regardless of growing protests from Kiev and its Western masters.

As the date of elections in the DPR and LNR approaches, the rhetoric of Western countries and Ukraine towards them becomes more and more irreconcilable. How it is perceived in Moscow and what to expect in the future, Alexey Chesnakov, director of the Center for Political Studies, explained Interfax.

He noted that Moscow does not plan to listen to the complaints of the EU representative Kosyanchich that these elections allegedly violate the letter and spirit of the Minsk agreements, since the corresponding Set of Measures of February 12, 2015 does not prohibit holding elections to the authorities of the DPR and the LPR .

At the same time, the expert added that if Kiev entered into a dialogue with the LPR and DPR, as required by the Minsk agreements, there would be no need for elections, and now they need to be held so as not to create a vacuum in the Minsk negotiation process.

“Now no one will listen to the opinion of the opponents of the elections in the Donbass. The time has gone. The machine is running. People are ready. Refusal of elections in such a situation will be perceived by all responsible political players as a serious step backwards – towards the emergence of a huge uncontrolled territory. Not to see this danger is obvious nonsense, ”concluded Chesnakov.
