US Threatens ‘Grave Consequences’ to those Supplying Oil to Syria

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has vowed severe punishment to anyone who is supplying oil to Syria or trying to circumvent US sanctions against Iran.

Washington believes that an illegal scheme is in place to support Syrian President Bashar Assad and to provide financial assistance to Hezbollah and Hamas.

On Tuesday, Pompeo wrote on Twitter about the consequences in question.

“Today’s @USTreasury action targeting the Russia-Iran oil scheme to prop up Assad, and finance Hizballah & Hamas, sends a clear message: there are grave consequences for anyone shipping oil to Syria, or trying to evade U.S. sanctions on the Islamic Republic’s terrorist activities,” he said.

This was followed up with an attack against Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

[email protected]_ir should decide if spending the Iranian people’s money on the Iranian people is more important than inventing schemes to fund Assad, Hizballah, Hamas, and other terrorists,” Pompeo added to his tweet thread.

The Treasury Department placed six individuals and three organizations on the list of those indicted on Tuesday.

Among those sanctioned are Russian companies Global Vision Group and Prommsyrioimport.

For Washington, Syrian national Mohammed Amer Alshviki owns the company Global Vision Group, which is supposed to play a key role in a scheme to supply oil to Syria, as well as financial transfers to Iranian forces.

Previously it was stated by James Jeffrey, the United States’ special envoy to Syria, that the second package of US sanctions against Iran aims to force Tehran to reduce its “presence” in Syria.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday that Iran would continue to export oil despite new US sanctions, which he described as a “psychological warfare doomed to failure”.

“We will not give in to that pressure that is part of the psychological warfare launched against Iran,” he told state television. “They failed to stop our oil exports. We will continue to export it… their regional policies have failed and you have blamed Iran for the failure of Afghanistan to Yemen and Syria,” he added, shouting “Death to America!”

Rouhani also said that the US had no international support for its sanctions against Iran.

“With the exception of the Zionist regime [Israel] and some countries in the region, no other country supports US pressure on Iran,” he said.
