Lavrov Explains Why He Opposes Recognizing the DPR and LPR

MOSCOW, Russian Federation – In comments to press, Lavrov spoke to clarify his position on the question of the possible recognition of the DPR and LPR. “If Russia recognizes the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, then it will lose relations with the rest of Ukraine”, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“Do you want to recognize the LPR and the DPR? So what is next? Lose the rest of Ukraine, leave it to the Nazis?” the diplomat rhetorically asked live on the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio station  on Monday, on December 17th.

The FM also drew attention to the fact that the current Kiev regime has all the features of a neo-Nazi regime, but the residents of Donbass are fighting with it. He expressed confidence that the overwhelming majority of Ukrainians want to get rid of this “shameful regime” and return to normal relations with Russia.

“We have relations with the Ukrainian state. The Ukrainian state is much more and much more important for us than the regime that came to power thanks to the West betraying all norms of international law and international behavior, ” he concluded.

The armed conflict in the Donbass began in the spring of 2014 and continues to this day . Residents of the region refused to recognize the new government, which changed in February of the same year as a result of a coup d’état, and announced the creation of the DPR and LPR.

In response, Kiev began the so-called anti-terrorist operation (ATO) against the republics, changing its name in April 2018 to the operation of the combined forces (EP).
