WASHINGTON, D.C. – A senior US official slammed the administration for “classifying information that shows the war on Afghanistan is going badly”, including data on Afghan troop casualties and assessments of the Taliban’s strength. John F. Sopko, the special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction, told Congress “when we talk about mendacity, when we talk about lying, it’s not just lying about a particular program. It’s lying by omissions. It turns out that everything that is bad news has been classified for the last few years”. Sopko stated that US officials have “lied to the public during the 18-year Afghan war… Continue ->

ABU DHABI – Exploitative employers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are increasingly using tourist visas to hire Indian nationals in a scam that leaves migrants open to labor abuse, police and activists stated. Indian migrants on visit visas – quicker and cheaper to obtain than work permits – are wary of reporting exploitation on the job for fear of revealing their illegal status, they say, according to Reuters. The scale of the problem is unknown as visit visas do not appear in Indian or UAE migration or employment records. But workers, police and lawyers said the practice is on… Continue ->

China bypasses Europe and Russia in the struggle for Ukraine

Published 2020-01-16 18:59:39 by Guest Author in China, Eurasia, Headline-News, Opinions, Ukraine

By Sergey Ustinov   One of the important economic results of the past 2019 was a complete surprise both for those Ukrainian politicians, experts and pique vests from the “cushioned hundred” who defended the European choice with foam at the mouth, and for those who are seeking to resist the ongoing de-industrialization of the country support in the usual orientation towards Russia and other CIS countries. While Europe was fighting with Russia for influence on Ukraine and Ukrainian markets, China quietly crept from the rear, confirming the correctness of the well-known worldly wisdom that where two fight, someone else wins…. Russia’s Big Gamble in Libya

Published 2020-01-16 18:46:37 by Guest Author in Eurasia, Headline-News, Libya, Mena, Opinions, Russia

By Steve Brown   First, the background.  When the United States abandoned the Iran agreement, that left Turkey’s oil imports adrift due to newly imposed US Treasury sanctions on Iranian oil exports. By December 2018, Turkey was forced to look elsewhere for its oil imports with Libya being the most logical choice by price and proximity, despite the violence there. Misrata rebels allied with Libya Dawn in charge of Libya’s largest free trade port, arranged oil exports from Zawiya and Sirte to Italy* and Turkey, at favorable prices.     Recall that Tripolitania (west) and Cyrenaica (east) are at war, and… Continue ->
