Pompeo ‘applauds’ Colombia’s violent response to peaceful protests

Published 2020-01-20 23:44:54 by Guest Author in Colombia, Headline-News, Latin-America

By Adriaan Alsema – Columbia Reports US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “applauded” Colombia’s President Ivan Duque‘s response to anti-government protests on Monday despite mass reports of human rights violations. Pompeo made the controversial statement during a visit to the South American country where he will attend a regional anti-terrorism summit and meet with Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido. During a joint press conference with Duque, Pompeo said “we applaud the way Colombia responded to the demonstrations, with professionalism, respect for human dignity and calling for national dialogue.” Our commitment is to respect human rights and the rule of law. We… Continue ->

SAVIN: Iraq – A Multipolar Restart

Published 2020-01-20 21:42:17 by Guest Author in Anglo-5, Headline-News, Iraq, Mena, Nato, Opinions, United-States

By Leonid Savin for Oriental Review, republished by FRN with permission * When the US began its military adventure in Iraq in 2003, many Western scholars noted that Washington’s unilateral aggression was leading to a rethinking of international processes, as well as the legitimisation and institutionalisation of multipolar thinking. There were various analyses of these events, from concepts of using force to ideology. Criticising America’s actions in the Middle East, for example, the Asia Times noted, “This war is a self-destructive cancer growing inside US neo-imperialism.” While considering that the Bush administration was making a serious mistake with its Iraq campaign, Immanuel… Continue ->

Iraq set to buy Russian S-400 air defense system and assert its sovereignty

Published 2020-01-20 19:10:44 by Guest Author in Eurasia, Headline-News, Iraq, Mena, Russia

Steven Sahiounie, political commentator Iran attacked US forces stationed at two bases in Iraq with 15 missiles on January 8th, but it does not appear missile defense systems were used to counter them. Eric Gomez, a missile defense policy analyst at the Cato Institute, said the next day, “And from the reporting I’ve seen about last night, it doesn’t appear that the US had a Patriot battery actually stationed at either of these bases.” The bases hit are Iraqi bases that house US troops, who have now been asked to leave Iraq by a parliament resolution.  Iraqi officials are deeply concerned… Continue ->

Germany’s Greens are not Green – They are Stars and Stripes

Published 2020-01-20 18:52:21 by Tom Winter in Eu, Eurasia, Germany, Headline-News, Russia, United-States

We translate Oskar Lafontaine’s January 1 Facebook post. The Greens and the Fracking Gas The Greens are the extended arm of the United States in the German Bundestag. This has been demonstrated again and again, most recently on the subject of fracking gas. In the interest of environmental protection, they should refuse to buy this dirty gas. But as “Friends of the USA” they keep coming up with something to enable the sale of this over-priced gas in Germany and Europe. Now the green co-chair Annalena Baerbock has come up with something new. We have “a considerable amount of leverage… Continue ->

On Taking Responsibility For Downing A Passenger Jet

Published 2020-01-20 12:00:01 by Curwen Ares Rolinson in Anglo-5, Headline-News, Iran, Mena, Politics, United-States

Despite what some are suggesting, there is little direct equivalency between the inadvertent Iranian shoot-down of Ukrainian International Airlines Flight 752 earlier this week, and the American shoot-down of Iranian Air Flight 655 in 1983. For that to be true, the Iranians would have to not only have obstinately refused to apologize for their actions, but also awarded their equivalent to the Legion of Merit decoration to the Iranian military unit responsible. I’m not kidding. That’s exactly what happened. In the aftermath of that incident, the Americans did not remove the officer responsible from command, even despite the observations of a… Continue ->

Here’s Why Iran (And The Western Media) is Not Being Honest About Ukraine Flight 752

Published 2020-01-20 11:00:06 by Joris De Draeck in Anglo-5, Defense, Eurasia, Headline-News, Iran, Mena, Politics, Ukraine, United-States

January 18, 2020 Joris De Draeck Most believe the reason behind Iran’s shooting down of flight 752 from Tehran to Kiev has been cleared up. The narrative that it was an unfortunate accident (mainly) by a single individual: Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander Hajizadeh is being widely accepted. The message was further broadcast by Major General Hossein Salami, chief of that same IRGC. However, there’s still plenty of questions which are left unanswered which, according to me, return part of the veil which most believe to have been uncovered. The Flight’s Delay Although flight delays happen all the time and are nothing to… Continue ->

US Trade Talks with China Must Ultimately Fail

Published 2020-01-20 10:00:41 by Guest Author in Anglo-5, China, Eurasia, Finance, Headline-News, Politics, United-States

By Steve Brown – Regardless of public opinion about the impeachment trial and how it will go — whether for or against — once again Washington is all show and no go. Even though the impeachment gambit must fail, the current idea that the administration will simply romp home to victory in 2020 is not guaranteed. The US Democratic party lacks a true leader and is riven with division but just as Mr Trump was an unexpected victor in 2016, nothing in US internal politics is ever certain.    Where the American people are concerned, so long as the Dow… Continue ->

Are There Patriot Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense Systems in Iraq?

Published 2020-01-20 09:00:35 by Guest Author in Anglo-5, Defense, Headline-News, Iran, Iraq, Mena, Politics, United-States

By Steve Brown – Certainly the US military limits information about particular missile defense systems deployed at particular bases and quite rightly so. However the US media has publicly stated that there are no Patriot missile defense systems at US military bases in Iraq.  It’s important to know the truth, in consideration of the Iran strikes on US bases in Iraq on January 8th. Publicly available reports even on the wiki (about US army brigades that use the MIM 104, some are in Iraq) and from the Arms Control Association verify the widespread use of the Raytheon-developed MIM-104 and Lockheed… Continue ->

Once Upon a Time in Iraq

Published 2020-01-20 08:00:18 by Guest Author in Anglo-5, Crime, Defense, Eurasia, Finance, Headline-News, Mena, Nato, Politics, United-States

By Steve Brown “A Society of Sheep must in time beget a Government of Wolves” — Bertrand de Jouvenel   Stephen Hadley, former National Security Advisor to the George W Bush regime, is one of the top US Neoconservative activists. Hadley is a pro, a battle-wizened key promoter of US aggression in Iraq. Hadley applauds and expounds on the ‘universal western morality’ regarding the US assassination of Iran’s key military commander Suleimani via the major media. That’s no surprise. However, Hadley’s enthusiasm for Suleimani’s destruction reeks more of puffery on the part of Raytheon Systems (as a key military supplier… Continue ->

On The Tantalizing Possibility Of “The People’s Prince”

Published 2020-01-20 07:00:54 by Curwen Ares Rolinson in Anglo-5, Canada, Finance, Headline-News, Politics, United-Kingdom

So over the past few weeks, the Royal Family has ‘lost’ two princes. I mean, they’re still there, nobody’s been exiled nor beheaded (potential migration to Canada notwithstanding), but nevertheless two Princes (and one Duchess) have taken a step back from being “Senior Royals”. The first of these … only did so, not once his position had become “untenable” – but arguably many, many moons post-facto to that point, and following possibly the largest crash-and-burn display of a museum-piece broadcast through media since the Hindenburg re-enactment society (flying under the command of one Captain Will Rogers III [Legion of Merit]) dive-bombed a 1/4th… Continue ->

Turkey vs. the EU – Erdogan Threatens 500 Year Occupation of Libya

Published 2020-01-20 00:06:17 by Joaquin Flores in Eurasia, Headline-News, Libya, Mena, Turkey

BERLIN –  In Berlin on January 19th was a peace conference, but the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, arrived there, if not on a war footing, certainly with the firm intention of conquering a leading position in the solution of the Libyan crisis. The goal is to ensure control of oil resources in Tripoli and contracts for the reconstruction of the country. Warnings and threats to the EU, on a day where Ankaras number one is certainly one of the figures in a position of greatest strength, but where the risk of returning home with the balance overturned is very… Continue ->
