Syrian government to Turkey: Get out of Afrin!

AFRIN, Syria – Afrin’s immediate evacuation after Turkey’s “unlawful invasion of the Kurdish region” is also formally demanded by the Syrian government following the arrival of the Turkish army in the center of the city.

Damascus, several days after Turkish troops invaded its territories, has responded with a statement from the Foreign Ministry, asking Ankara to immediately withdraw its troops from its territories, which it has occupied.

In the same statement, the Syrian government speaks of “a clear violation of territorial integrity” and calls for the reaction of international organizations.

The situation seems to be complicated enough, as Damascus’s reaction is assumed to have been approved by Russia and Vladimir Putin, although Moscow has concluded significant agreements on all fronts with Ankara in recent months.

At the same time, the US, while opposed to the Bashar al-Assad government, issued a warning against Turkey regarding the Turkish army’s assault on the Kurdish-majority region of Afrin, as many civilians have been hit.

Turkey, for its part, argues that the “Olive Branch forces,” a coalition of the Turkish military and their jihadist allies, concerns the cleansing of terrorist groups, describing “terrorists” as Kurds and adds that it does not intend to occupy the lands but also that it will not limit its action to that point.

Why hasn’t Syria demanded the same from the US? One would think that the US occupation is more dangerous to Syrian sovereignty than Turkey.
